About

The first gift action occurred November 7th. It was grand. Thanks to those who made it out.

The next public gift action will occur at Nic*Rad’s solo show in April at Rare Gallery…

The show will be installed April 3rd, and can be viewed in total up until April 29th when the work will be given away.

For information about reserving a piece: find Nic Rad. Track him down. Really. He’s nice.

PeopleMatter.info is the online community and documentation of a Gift as Art initiative.

The title is taken from Nic*Rad’s media project “PeopleMatter” comprised of 99 paintings of traditional and new Media personalities to be exhibited, and then given away at the opening in April, to those in attendance at Rare Gallery.

This gift experiment is conducted in response to the impact of technological advances that allow for increased sharing of information and content. The project will survey distorting effects of this transition on emerging and developing ideas.

Subjects were chosen based on personal Googling, Twittering, Hyperlinking, Facebooking, RSS culling and otherwise staggering around the internet and media cyberscape.

Recipients of the work will be encouraged to participate in the on going gift actions of the PeopleMatter community as well as setting the second hand value of  art works as conversation vessel, novelty, or digital and physical barter.

This project is composed of four parts:

Trust me to not read the small print, its not til April that your stuff gets gifted. What an interesting idea, hope it goes off okay...but will galleries turn you into some kind of pariah for not selling? I dont know Nic, i had a lecture from one the other day in between his, "Oh I think we sold one of yours the other day, I think we owe you some money"... they wanted to "save on postage"... so glad they , "waited til you came in"... gee I could have waited another year for a measly £80 Nic! It was "just a wee etching"...etc etc. Its this ongoing being treated like some poor relation all the time...to use your word , that is "galling"... and yes , I love the hint of subversion coming into the works. Keep that up, im somewhat constrained by myself , (most likely), in that I seek some of that freeing up, while worrying that it "might be damaging?" not certain. thanks for giving me much to ponder... best Fraser
